Running a tube with a metal plate such as the 833A I belive it is OK to run
with a cherry red/orange plate,  if it starts showing light orange/ yellow,
you are bound to do dammage.  You could try tuning it down on your variac
right below the threshold of plate redness and see if your performance is
hurt.
