Could the harm in ozone come from the excess O2 thats being produced from
it?

     The harm in ozone comes not from the O2, but from the third oxygen
atom which is very loosely attached so it reacts easily. This is what makes
ozone a more powerful oxidizer than regular oxygen. O3 has 142 kJ/mol of
excess energy over O2.

The reaction O3 + X => XO +O2 is much faster  than O2 + 2X=> 2XO

   The biological effect on the nose and lungs is similar to snorting
chlorine gas or acid vapors. :-(~. While there are amateur web sites and
politically-motivated web sites that describe ozone as odorless, I have not
found a single chemistry textbook that does not describe it as having a
pungent odor, which would be consistent with the free O radical reacting
with the sensors in the nasal tissue, as some of the surface molecules are
being oxidized.

Hope this helps,
Matt D.
