Hi Adam,
        Many Toilet Seat Maintenance Kits have nylon or similar 
replacements for the brass bolts. Check in the plumbing repair section of 
your favorite hardware store.
Plexiglas can be used, but it is a *itch to cut without splintering and 
cracking.
