Josh,

To take full advantage of the NST's power, you need to set the
safety gap wider, but then the NST is stressed more.  Depends
on what you want; an NST that may last 10 years, or maybe one
that will last 2 years but give longer sparks.  It's all guesswork to
a degree because NST's are not designed for Tesla coil use.
