I've done a little of that.  My primary coil is mounted on a base that I
can adjust up or down a few inches easily relative to the secondary
coil.   I've adjusted the height for the best output based upon my
totaly subjective assessment of spark length.   As should be no suprise,
when I rasied it up too high I ended up with racing sparks on the
secondary.  I think the height I have now is just backed off the "racing
spark" height a half inch or so.
