The only real reason for the "electronic NST's" is that they can be
made cheaper (no iron or copper to speak of). Semiconductor parts can
be made so cheaply that they are dominating the field. The electronic
NST's are lighter too but that is of less importance than $$$$$$$$$$$.
Same reason almost all modern appliances (and automobiles) have a
"computer" in them for control. The processor and keypad can be made
for a lot lower price than the old switches and dials.
This is most definitely a case of "newer is not necessarily better".
Wish I could get my wife to learn that.
