I think lot's of people don't use HV wire. I usually don't on lashups and
general messing around. However, If I am building a "permanent" device, I
generally do use HV wire. Greater safety, looks all mad science and it does
allow for tighter spacing. Lower corona loss too, depending on what you are
doing. On my lifter it is key. And sometimes those wires don't stay apart as
far as you think they will ;-) So *I* would say that you don't have to, but
it can be nice.
