Well, finally had the time to modify my minicoil.
I basically changed my tank capacitance from 0.0112 to 0.0224uF which is
much closer the resonant size for the 4kV/38mA (modified 4020SE tranformer)
and also increased
my toroid size a bit using an aluminum covered packaging crate isolator
(which is what Gary Laus is using as well) The final output now does 12+
inches for output streamers with no
problem so that should put me close to what Steve Ward is getting on his
coil in the contest. I still have some racing sparks on the secondary but
am able to reduce them considerably by slightly retuning my primary. Also,
the bang rate is considerably reduced and the bang size is increased
dramatically. Kept spark gap spacing at 0.050" but may reduce it a bit to
increase bang rate a bit.
Anyone else still building or modifying their 4kV minicoils????
