I have seen the "Beer Can of Columbus" demonstrated at the university EE 
department. It's an aluminium beer can mounted on a knitting needle bearing 
with two coils of wire spaced by 90 degrees around it. One coil runs off AC 
directly and the other through a capacitor. The beer can spins like crazy.
