If there's machining involved anyway, why not start with a length
of brass rod of around 3/4 inch diameter and machine some grooves
in it with a parting tool.  Doing so will dramatically increase
the surface area while retaining the good heat conduction of a
solid piece.  The ends can be drilled and/or tapped as needed
for holding the actual electrodes and for mounting.
