I've already asked the power utility in a small town I used to live in if I
could pick thru their transformers.  The town has its own hydro plant, so
they maintain the transformers, etc. Sounds like I've got a good shot at
picking thru the pile.  Also, might want to check out some of the big
contracting companies for auctions.  There is a big auction coming up about
60 miles from home, and I'm going to check it out.  These people bid on
substations, city installations, etc.  Maybe check out local auction
listings.  Other than us, the only bidders will be recyclers, which brings
up another point.  Check with a local copper recycling outfit.  The case of
beer and cash you offer is worth far more than the copper they can retrieve.
