This was studied, long time ago. The first time apparently by Maxwell.
See item #690 in his book "A treatise on electricity and magnetism".
Other studies about the problem were done by Heaviside, Kelvin,
Rayleigh, Russell, etc.
The problem of a straight wire is already quite complicated. I don't
know about a closed-form solution when the wire is in a coil.
