I saw the same show but what I remember of it was that they discharged a 
cap to show the mega amp current in lightning thru a wire     the T coil 
was used to simulate the different senarios of how lightning can do what it 
does...  I dont believe they discharged a cap thru the streamer...

I believe the owner of the T Coil was  the KVA group   maybe he can tell us 
what they did for the show....   I wonder if there was some F-4 black 
powder in the phone ;)

of all the trashed radios, mother boards and assorted PC boards, ,I never 
had one explode like the phone did on the show
