Yes, many coilers decide to go the pole pig route when they get tired
of the hassle of weak, proned to burn out, NSTs or OBITs. MOTs are more
tolerant of the high voltage transients encountered in coiling but you
have to gang several together and submerge them in oil to be able to
run pole pig power levels with them. Pole pigs (and PTs) are darn near
bullet proof but DO require external ballasting to use in a Tesla circuit.
All in all though, I would definitely opt for the pole pig approach
if I'm looking for huge sparks with reliability of the power supply,
assuming that weight and portability are NOT an issue. Almost all pole
pigs wiegh several hundred lbs and most PTs weigh in around 100 lbs. each. ;^/
