Everyone calls them variacs, even if that's a proprietary name.  It happens.
The transformer is fine and that's what I bought it for and it has been fine
over the course of the year I had it.  I don't see how this affects you by
the least.  I did not want a used piece of crap of ebay covered in black tar
and have a ground down brush.  The variac I got from KRM Is fine.  They also
make some nice small 5A models.  Not to mention,  you find me an American
made (brand new) 10A variac, for under a hundred dollars and I'll buy it.
