I am beginning to agree with what you are saying. Trying to rate Tesla coils
with energy input and spark output is useless. It is a simple matter to find
the input energy but the output energy  for sparks is just too complex a
variable. However, the post I sent to Matt is a possible solution that may
be used under limited conditions.
