The true AC synchronous motor would have zero torque when in syn with the
utility line because the stator magnetic field would be changing with the
rotor field. Tesla discovered a solution to this problem with the rotating
field induction motor.

The true AC synchronous motor is the electrical oposite of the electric
utility generators. Both require a DC source for creating the unchanging
magnetic field. The DC can be used to control the power factor for lead or
lag. The true AC synchronuous motor is the only so-called synchronous motor
that reaches maximum torque when the utility voltage is at maximum.

I was referring to the synchronous mechanical rectifier referred to in the
previous links. It seems like if there's any significant load on the output
the arcs will just simply be stretched out (like a climbing arc on a JL)
until the next electrode presentation where the process would repeat, unless
the motor was perfectly synchronous. I always thought that exactly 1800/3600
(or some multiple of 60 for 60Hz) rpm = 0 torque, so no such thing as a
perfectly synch motor. Maybe I'm overlooking something.
