Re: Magnet Wire Sources

That's the name I've tried to forget, Express Wire Service. Wayne Sercey
(sp) probably still remembers me yelling at him for sending non-spec
wire. They represent a number of manufacturers. In all fairness to Essex,
my problems could have been due to some new employees' learning curve with
the equipment, new equipment, bad coating material, or a batch of dirty or
slightly oxidized wire that wouldn't adhere the coating properly. Their
V.P. of Q.C. was absolutely worthless as I'm still waiting for replacement
wire some 2 + years later. My issue was the uneven coating on the
wire. I'm sure their hi temp wire, as well as probably being the cheapest
on the market, doesn't have this problem, that second coat over the crappy
first coat probably seals it fairly well. You get what you pay for, I
still find it puzzling that in a component as critical as the wire is, many
will go for the absolute cheapest stuff they can get their hands on. I've
taken the approach of buying the b
est components possible, at the end of the day they may actually be the
cheapest.

One other tip when ordering larger gauge wire, I especially noticed this
with 12 gauge, if you buy it re-spooled onto a smaller spool, it can be
almost impossible to tightly wind as the re-spooling process can introduce
another curvature onto the wire (re-spooled 180 degrees off from
original?), it refused to lie flat on the coilform and you just couldn't
pull it tight enough. Problem solved by buying it on the larger 80 to 90
lb spools.

This will be my last rant regarding Essex. Sort of therapeutic in a
strange way. I do feel better now. I'm off to fire up my twin parallel
magnifier. Cheers. John
