Size and weight will be the savings.

I won't know the final weight until I receive the cores & coils, but it will
be approx 1/2 the weight of a potential xmfr --- and use a lot less weight
than a big spool of wire.

For experimenters on a budget, I agree, it's not the most economical way.  I
was hopeful that I could get the job done for less than $450 but that's not
the reality.
