The equation L = u Nsqrd pi Rsqrd / (l) is from classic physics, we
made no claim that it was our own equation. Sometimes textbooks write
the above in a slightly different form.

The assumptions made in the classic derivation is that the flux is
uniform within the inductor. In reality the flux could only be
perfectly uniform for an infinitely long inductor with a "uniform
sheet of current".

Wheelers is handy for building (most) inductors, but is not very
useful for analytic work. The degree of accuracy of either the classic
formulae or the Wheeler formulae depends essentially on the length of
the inductor and how closely packed the windings are.

Wheelers is real good, but if your trying to use the "pure" equations for other work, it is pretty useless... In many cases, we have resorted to pure number crunching programs that iterate through trillions of calculations... The programs are real good at finding a "darn good!" answer in problems with horrific complications!!! But they do lack a nice "math formula" solution.... In general, we use the best tool we can find for a given problem...

Today, our current formulas and methods are very good, but not well documented in "books". Very few of the modern methods we use are "classic"...

You remarked that many coilers build non wire length coils that work
just fine. We never said that wire length standing wave resonance was
the whole story. Waves obey superposition and energy must go
somewhere.

Of course, one "can" build a nice 1/4 wave coil too with no harm!! Some suggest that the resonances (Corums) will help the coil a bit. But those who have coils that are not a nice 1/4 wave designs, have no reason to worry ;-))

The matter of an apology to terry:

I (Jared) stated that you deleted my posting. The fact that you did re-
post the specifications for our 1.5 wave coil and any subsequent
postings we have made, attests to your integrity concerning the
posting of dissenting opinions.

I hope that you accept my apology.

Of course!!, the servers crashed this morning too, but I think nothing got messed up. I never get mad at anybody :-))) Your all just little pixels on a LCD screen to me :o))) I never would "just remove" a post because "I didn't like it". I usually have a well warn out old reason and let you know why if that happens. Rest assured, that Terry has a very thick hide :-)))

Cheers,

        Terry
