Daniel,

Using a sync rotary, the safety gap should never fire unless some
problem occurs.  Also the firing should never be rough with a sync rotary.
A common problem is that the main rotary gap spacings are set
too wide.  Often they must be very close such as 0.010" or 0.020"
for reliable steady smooth firing.  The unsteady firing may be
contributing to the racing sparks too.
