Hi,

The low cost ones I have seen have different color emitting phosphors in
concentric  rings. I am guessing but the gas mixture is probably similar to
that contained in a florescent light but at a higher pressure to get the
thin intense discharge. So its probably argon and mercury. The on voltage is
probably some where a round a few hundred volts with start voltage of about
ten times that.
