The subject of power flow in space versus power flow in the guiding
conductor was the subject of debate in part of this thread.

While it is true that the power flows in the space round the conductor
consider this.  For a dipole above a conducting ground plane the far field
power is the sum of the power from the dipole and the power from the image
of the dipole in the ground plane. 50% from each for a highly conducting
ground plane.  Hence half the power is from the ground plane.  Though the
power from the ground plane is a reflection never the less that power is vie
the currents induced in the ground plane.   This would be true of any
guiding conductor so in this sense part of the power flow is via the current
in the conductor but its direction (ignoring losses) is in and out of the
surface.
