No, your toploads are well sized. My particular coil had an undersized topload, so that was a natural direction. Something I didn't mention is that I could repeat the situation simply by putting the old toroid back on.

I've read your other reply's as well. The wood primary isn't the best of ideas. I've been using them forever, but I have had problems with tracking. I eventually slipped a plexi strip between primary and wooden runner to increase proximity. New primary however will be all plexi.

The fan may be your actual problem. Maybe you are simply overheating. Can your run a your 80V setting for a long time or does spark length diminish quite a bit (say 30 seconds of running)? If so, heat may be your issue.

Thanks for your thoughts Bart. I had thought I already had a pretty sizeable topload setup. A 6X24 and a 6X20 separated by about 12". Would you go bigger still? I seemed to have had it tuned & operating pretty well with this combination. The problem has surfaced only recently. Dennis Hopkinton MA
