Terry & perhaps others,

Recently you mentioned you were going to try triggering your SIDAC-IGBT
stack with an ignition coil. I came across an interesting and simple
variable rate trigger circuit for a strobe light which also uses a SIDAC!
It might work well for your trigger - see
http://geocities.com/lgtngstk/Strobe/Strobe.html. Just substitute the
ignition coil for the trigger transformer. Of course, eliminate the flash
tube & R1, and you will probably want to increase C3 to pump more energy
into the ignition coil and correspondingly decrease R3 and R2 to get the
break rate range you want. Also, an ignition coil without a common
primary/secondary connection would be safer, or run the trigger from an
isolation transformer.
