hello,

the glass is a sealed vessel containing a mixture of gasses at low 
preassure. if you break it youll loose the gasses and low preassure 
and so you wont get the same effect as with the glass there.

Although, i opend up a small one once to see what was in it. it is 
really just a small high frequency inverter powering a little ferrite 
cored transformer that is similar to a flyback transformer. although 
you wont get nearly the same effect in open air as in the bulb, you 
can still draw 1/2 to 1 inch arc off it!! (watch out for RF burns though).
