Try a visit to a neon sign company.  Sometimes they dismantle old signs when
they replace them with new signs.  They may have some short sections of
neon, argon filled etc tubes out of old signs that make interesting
alternatives to florescent tubes.  You can also make your own using argon
gas obtained at a welding supply store.  For example, you could try
inflating translucent balloons with argon.  Bill Beaty has posted other
better ideas for using argon with TCs.
