MOT cores are often welded like this.  I imagine it's
just cheaper than using nuts and bolts, and the eddy
currents are probably considered no big deal, because
these kinds of transformers aren't meant to be run
continuously and can therefore run at higher
temperatures.

But I could be wrong.
