Hi,

You might consider a light dimmer control. They are light weight and cheap. Sometimes they burn up and short full on so have a second switch and be sure it is ok if the coil suddenly gets full power. You could just use a "switch" too. I think the dimmers for ceiling fans (inductive load) might last longer.

Maybe someone with more knowledge here will know?
