hi steve
ive been messing with that sort of stuff and i can tell you the ones you get from a novelty store would definatly compare to the solid state coils but also im making a tiny one for my walking stick and that will have a spark gap !! very similar in principle but nowhere near the power levels but i dare say somebody will say different on this list as its not a "tesla coil"

I was just wondering, how different is a plasma ball that you buy from a novelty store compared to a Tesla coil?
