Hi Scott,

Although tuning will work fine either way, tapping form the inside can 
cause coupling variation if large, but if small no big deal there. 
However, from a mechanical perspective, keeping the inside primary nice 
and tidy reduces risks of protrusions which a "tap" can cause. Tap's on 
the inside can cause pri to sec arcing due the low corona inception 
voltage of the tap.

On your second question. If the wires are not getting hot, then yes. If 
your in only design mode, I would say yes, they should by fine. It is 
nice however to keep everything down to 1 wire. The single 5 awg might 
do fine depending on your power. 5 awg is about 1/8" diameter and will 
likely be ok. Heat always tells the tale.
