Dave,

I remember someone reporting that primary strikes were eliminated
after they put a plexiglas disc over the primary.

Hi John, Bart, Gary L.,

I've also abandoned to ad a strike-rail to my coils. Primary strikes (which you can have, not regarding strike-rail anyway!) didn't hurt my caps or transformer (Terry filter installed!). An acrylic sheet on top of the primary winding eliminated the sec-prim strikes to the coil, however infrequent strikes to the primary connections were observed. See a picture at:

In the picture I've indicated, were occasionally a sec. to primary-system hit was experienced. No damage so far (it's fed by a 15kV/60mA NST). Of course I agree with the conservation of energy argument of Gary Lau, but a small concern remains regarding the dynamics of such a hit: might it be able, to do any damage in short time and at a localized place?

Cheers, and happy new year to the gang!

Kurt
