Re: [TCML] How necessary is a Terry Filter

Hi Vinnie,

All of us only had safety gap protection for quite a while and nothing more. This was also a time when NST deaths were common place. Since the use of LTR cap sizes and Terry's NST Filter, the NST's now have some protection. It's not 100% full proof, but it does help filter out the nasty stuff that can potentially kill the NST. You of course don't have to use it, but it is a nice addition to any NST coil.

Terry Filter parts:

L100J1K0E = 100W, 1Kohm Resistor (Mouser has it for 8.89 ea). You need 2.
RC20GF106J = 1/2W, 10Mohm Resistor (Mouser has them at 0.39 ea). You need 12. ECW-H16332JV = 0.0033uF Cap, 1600V (Digikey has them at 0.63 ea). You need 12.
ERZ-V10D182 = MOV, 1800V, 2500A (Digikey has them for 1.33 ea). You need 14.

Total = $48.64 not including taxes, shipment, etc. Kind of spendy, but then NST's aren't cheap. Even used can be expensive unless your one of the lucky ones that stumbled across a truck load.

Hi Guys

In building a new coil I am wanting to do it right and also hope to have it around for a long time. When I built my first coil I had no transformer protection other than a simple safety gap. Both of my transformers are still good even with out the filter. I was wondering if I really need this layer of protection? I run my coil with two 12/30 NST's and an RQ spark gap that contains 6 segments of 1in. copper couplers. Second part I am wondering about AC line protection? I see that some use an RF filter on the AC input. If anyone has any advice /parts list or completed Terry Filter I would also be interested in cost. I'm trying to work within a pretty tight budget at the moment so I would suppose that making the filter myself would be best but just thought I would ask.

As always thank you for your time and guidance,

Vinnie
