I would probably not seek thoriated rods. I dont think starting an arc is an issue since they will pass the stationary electrode with small clearance. The thoriated rods may power arc at a lower threshold and I dont think you want to inhale radioactive stuff.

Thoriated rods are better because of their increased electrical properties.
Hopefully the ones you are getting have that in them.
