Original poster: ashumate3@xxxxxxx I know what's happening with the arc to the fire and smoke - Fire generates carbon as a product and it is the carbon that is conducting the electricity. The same with smoke - along with all of the chemical compounds that is generated, carbon is one of the products.

The laser will have to be able to react with components in the air to generate a conductor with out losing power.

One of the reasons for arcing is moisture in the air. Put a Tesla Coil in a vacuum chamber and see how much arcing you get. The same will apply in extremely dry conditions.
