st primaries in nsts use 12 or 14 AWG wire. Secondaries are #40 or #42 AWG. Usually 1 Volt per turn, so 1/2 of the xmfr at 6 kV on a 12 kV center-tap grounded nst, would require approx 6,000 turns of the very small guage wire. This is why most of them are wound on a computer controlled lathe or similar machine.

If you can pick up a used nst for $50 - $70 you are way ahead of the curve in terms of labor, time, and materials cost.

You forgot to mention that, at least in all of the transformers I've unpotted, the secondary is layer wound with insulating paper between each layer. That's something that's almost impossible to do by hand with such fine wire gauges.
