Re: Hamfest score...

Yes, very nice fest. I found some 2 nf 40KV doorknobs, an 813 tube, some beefy power resistors.

All,

Among my finds at last Saturday's hamfest in Dalton,
GA, was a Hewlett Packard 652A test oscillator. It is
a rack mount unit capable of generating a sine wave
from 0 to 10MHz and has a nice dial with vernier
drive, plus a needle to indicate voltage/amplitude. I
have finally had the opportunity to use a sig
gen/scope combination to take real measurements of a
TC secondary. I have just done my 19" winding length
of AWG 26, 3.5" diameter VTTC secondary, which appears
to show about 750KHz unloaded. For this test, the
secondary was placed upright on a wooden end table
about 2 feet off of the ground. I also had the luxury
of placing the probe of a frequency counter on the
output BNC-->gator clip lead of the test oscillator,
since the HP unit does not have a digital display. It
just makes things quicker, especially since my tek
922R scope has a glitch in the horizontal sync that
comes and goes. I am getting that cheap Velleman LCD
scope in a couple days. I have began my SSTC work,
and I believe a scope will be a must. I'd like to do
more than just make sparks (at least eventually). I
hope to make some kind of a contribution or two after
I have learned the SMPS art.

Anyway, I would have pictures of my test setup, but
the batteries in my digital camera died after the
first picture. I will post them later, as well as all
the test settings (if there is interest).

I've been coiling and working with high voltage for
2/3 of my life, and I finally have reached the point
where I am closer to owning the test equipment I
always dreamed of having. This is a lot of fun!

Cheers,
-Brett

PS: Cameron and David: Great to meet you guys. Too
bad we didn't get to talk even more, but I think
everyone was running around in a frenzy trying to grab
the good parts. Still, it was fun meeting and I hope
you guys had a safe trip back home. Sorry I didn't
get to meet up with you, Adam!
