Dave,
     I have found that some motors will run quite well if hooked up
incorrectly (assuming a 45 second life span is not a problem for your
application!).  In seriousness however, check and make sure the motor did
not make use of any run/start capacitors, that could explain some of the
extra wiring.  Thats all I got.
