HPS lamps contain argon, mercury and sodium in a ceramic envelope. The HV  
starting pulse from the ballast ionizes the argon, which in turn vaporizes a bit 
 of mercury and it temporarily becomes a mercury vapor discharge that heats 
up  and vaporizes a bit of sodium, which emits that bright yellowish light. The 
 ceramic envelope becomes optically clear at operating temperature, and is 
used  because sodium will attack glass, even fused quartz. So, you probably have 
 argon/mercury vapor strobe instead.

strobe when run in the place of the primary coil.
