Re: [TCML] Let's try this again... - was: [TCML] MMC pics

I have "only" recommended this exact part:

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=10MH-ND

Long tested and proven... I fear that 1/4W resistors will either burn up or arc over...

I used to send them totally free to any and all that asked... But I don't even know if I have any here these days ?:)

But Bart's advise to put two in series per cap works very well!!!

Henry may be right here. Are those 1/4W resistors? They may have a problem if they are. Expect about 1000V across each resistor if a 9kV NST. Their probably right on the edge where they may work for a while, but don't be surprised if they do burn at some point. You may want to series 2 resistors per cap to be safe if you have them around.

Take care,
Bart

Capacitors look okay. Resistors are going to catch fire.

Last time I looked Electronics Goldmine (www.goldmine-elec.com) had some high voltage resistors available. I picked up some 18meg, 4kv resistors, but I haven't used them yet. Actual high voltage resistors may not really offer much in this application other than a physically larger distance between
leads for voltage standoff... Not sure if that's worth the expense.

Today I made a new MMC. I took apart the old one and straightened all the leads the best I could. I then found an unused cutting board (it's blue, I hope that doesn't matter) in my kitchen and used it to mount the caps. I drilled holes in the board and cut it lengthwise to make two long, narrow boards (it's tough to cut the plastic with a jigsaw; it melts behind the blade). I used too much solder than I wanted to, the leads weren't
clean.

I made two boards of six caps. The caps are in series with the resistors
parallel. Pictures submitted for approval.

What do you think? Are they Tesla worthy??
Now they look ok. I would prefer physically larger resistors, or several
in series, but these probably will work.
To cut plastic with a jigsaw, apply some oil to the blade. Cuts like
butter then.
