Should be plenty big, but the size is pretty chunky for a slide choke.  You 
might need a crank mechanism to be able to move it, though. Bombarder chokes  
are long and skinny, about 2" to 3" square by maybe a foot long.

I'd use at least #8 gauge stranded THHN or hi-temp plastic insulated wire  
for the coil and phenolic for the bobbin. Heat will build up very quickly in a  
tight wound coil and melt most plastics.
 
Or, instead of making a slide choke, you could just bring out several  taps.
