Magnetic quenching works by stretching the spark gap plasma over a longer curved path. During primary current ringup/ringdown, the arc spreads out over a wider, plane-like region. Spreading out the arc aids in cooling, potentially aiding in quenching at the expense of a somewhat higher gap voltage drop. During a current notch, quenching has no direct effect, but more rapid cooling would assist in the gap recovering its dielectric strength during primary notches.

The longer the duration of the current notch, the more time the gap has to recover. The degree of arc stretching is proportional to gap current and the applied magnetic field. Magnetic quenching should be most effective systems operating at lower frequency, using higher peak primary currents, with powerful NIB magnets providing the ambient field. Tesla claimed success using relatively poor magnets of his day. So have a number of modern day experimenters on the TCML using ferrite and NIB magnets.

However, there are few quantified, before-after tests, and the area is ripe for further research. The technique should be effective for both static and rotary gaps.
