David Rieben will reply, I'm sure, as he uses surge arresters as protection for his pole pigs and seems to like them.  On the whole, I think the Tesla coiling community lacks sufficient data to suggest whether these are really the way to go or not.  My own preference is safety gaps, mainly because:
1) You can see them operate.
2) They can't be destroyed (easily, anyway :-))

The particular arresters shown below appear to be fairly old.  They probably employ silicon carbide elements with air gaps in between.  Modern MOV-based arresters are much more non-linear and generally way better.  IIRC, that's what Dave uses.  You might wait around for one of those to appear.
