Yes the transformer was originally from a radar set 8.25 kv, cores are 2 x 1 
inch, giving 8 sq inches for the middle leg. 

I am using brown parcel paper or 'Kraft' paper I think is the other name. 
It's heavy duty (90gsm) about 5 thou thick. When loaded with oil it is 
capable of holding off around 3K from tests that I've done. This is well in 
excess of the voltage pd between layers. 

(Of course that could well be the 'kiss of death' to the project now <grin>)
