I used insulated 12ga wire as a flat primary and it works perfectly. no  
need to pace the turns either....mind you, tapping can be a pain, but It is  
manageable. Makes for a compact primary too.

What about using AWG 10 or AWG 12 bare copper  wire?  Galvanized iron wire 
is pretty high resistance.  But you can  do the calculations and  see.
