Hello Jim,
One simple method that is effective, even if time-consuming, is taking apart microwave ovens and getting their diodes out. In practice, I've been able to run them at 10KV at 46mA continuous and 24V at one amp for very short periods.
What you can do is get the microwaves on Craigslist for, say, an average of ten dollars a piece. With the microwave you get the diode you're looking for, the MOT, the 2KV 1uF capacitor, relays and more.
