Re: [TCML] My Hemisphere/Toroid with Unconnected Top Sphere results

Hi Peter,
With the sphere isolated, you have a large capacitor on top of your
TC, with the sphere being one plate, the hemisphere-toroid combination being
a second plate, and the ground being the third plate. This is in parallel
with the internal capacitance of the secondary giving the total effective
secondary capacitance. Evidently, this combination tunes well with your
primary, so despite the internal arcing between the "plates" you get a better
result. When the two are in electrical contact, you have essentially one fat
top plate and a different capacitance, meaning it is again mis-tuned and
results go down. There is a good bit of anecdotal evidence that very good
results are obtained when C(topload) >= C(internal). Of course, calculating
the capacitance of any but the simplest shapes is non-trivial.

Hope this helps some,

Matt D.
