Hi Miles,  One possibility would be a surplus servo type motor.  Theses are 
three phase synchronous motors that have permanent magnet rotors.  You would 
have to do some tricks to get one to run on single phase power but that is easy 
enough.  I was just playing around with small Fanuc type servo motor like the 
one here  http://www.flickr.com/photos/29248051@N02/4395210640/ . I hooked up 12 
volts AC 60Hz to it and started it by hand and it ran at exactly 900 RPM (I 
measured it with a tack ) 
 
   At 900 RPM you would need a wheel that would break the spark at 8 times per 
revolution.  Most people would prefer 1800 RPM so they could use a smaller wheel 
but you might be able to live with 900 RPM.
