A more long term solution is to nickle plate the copper. This is actually easier than you think and can be done at home, you just need the plating chemicals, an adjustable low voltage current source (an old time battery eliminator works great) and a small paint brush.


brings up an interesting point.. nickle plating is easy to come by (they usually do a nickle plate before chrome, gold, or others) and shines up nice. Even gold plating isn't all that expensive, either with electroplating or with evaporation, because it's a pretty thin coat.
