Hi,
I put a 5v mains AC voltage on the scopes second channel and display both.
You then see where the phase is in relation to the AC sine. When it is
actually running real HV, the spark advances as it 'jumps' to the
approaching electrode a bit anyway. But by doing it this way you can at
least see how many degrees your altering the phase by, and you can then
decide if you have enough movement of the phase at the outset, and the best
place to set the rotor initially to make use of the amount of shift that you
do have. John's circuit is a real time saver.

You don't need a photo sensor as in the vid, as Teslalabour's method will
work as well.

When using Line-Sync on the scope, that works fine for verifying that the
motor is running synchronously, but it offers no guidance as to where the
phase should be set for optimal operation.
